Marjolein Wortmann was born in 1958 and graduated
at the Minerva Academy of Fine Arts in Groningen, Holland. She has
exhibited in many galleries and museums in the countries where she
has lived and worked: Holland, Belgium, India, Colombia, Italy, Tunisia.
In all these places painting has been her means of understanding,
coming to terms with and appreciating local cultures.
She painted a great deal during the years 1986-1999 that she spent
in Colombia. She also produced printed works, frequently in the form
of cartoons, for organisations of fishermen and indians and for some
government authorities. In the Caribbean village of Tolú she created
the 'Expresarte' foundation together with young fishermen, builders
and students, and every day for several years directed a series of
art workshops for more than fifty young people. The project is still
supported by the Belgian NGO Broederlijk Delen and in their turn several
young people now direct workshops for local children and for other
young people and teachers from a neighbouring village.
The eventual worsening of the civil war in Colombia lead her to discover
'another South' in Palermo. Here in the centre of the Mediterranean
she is intrigued by the interweaving of different cultures. |
